This was the Perl QA Hackathon in Vienna
The Perl QA Hackathon 2010 in Vienna is over and has been a great success. It was fun, interesting, inspiring, intensive and tiring. Seeing the Perl friends again felt very good.
We met on Friday early evening and parted on Monday late evening, so the hackathon was about as long as a YAPC would be, but because there were only about thirty people and they were all in the same room, it was much easier to talk to everyone, exchange ideas and work together.
Flights, hotel costs, lunches, dinners, drinks and snacks were all paid for by Vienna.pm with the help of the hackathon sponsors, 123people.at and the Österreichische Bibliothekenverbund (the Austrian Library Network and Services Ltd).
I've uploaded my photos from the weekend to Flickr.
On Sunday and Monday there were a total of three stand-up sessions where each of us talked a bit about what he had achieved so far. brian d foy recorded them:
domm blogged about the first day of the hackathon as well. Ovid wrote about his work at the hackathon.

YAPC::Europe 2009 photos
I've created a photoset with 126 photos from YAPC::Europe 2009. Enjoy!
If you search for the tag "yapceu2009", you should find more photos from other conference attendees.

YAPC::Europe 2009 pre-conference meeting
Just got back from the pre-conference meeting. A very large number of Perl hackers arrived at the Irish pub that is located on the Expo '98 site. The poor staff were clearly overwhelmed and started treating food orders as singletons: If you ordered something that someone else had already ordered, they just assumed you're the same person and ignored you.
Still, a very good time was had, and a few (actually not so few) of us then repaired to a fish restaurant more or less next to the pub. I could finally put some faces to names and met joel, osfameron and ashb in person. We left at 11pm to get some rest before the YAPC actually starts.
There was no pre-registration at the social meeting, so I guess the organizers will be quite busy tomorrow morning.

I'm going to YAPC::Europe 2009 in Lisbon
Last night we had a Vienna.pm meeting. I got enthusiastic about YAPC::Europe 2009 so I booked a flight to and hotel in Lisbon and bought the conference ticket. I'm looking forward to seeing fellow Perl hacker friends again, especially @keiosu, @maokt, and @kawa0117.

YAPC::Asia 2008 photo slideshow
YAPC::Asia 2008 in Tokyo was fun, and I hope to be able to go to YAPC::Asia 2009 again, although the chance for that isn't so good, as I'm already taking a two-week holiday in Japan this May. But I want to show you photos I took at YAPC::Asia 2008, to encourage you to go as well. Really, it's quite an experience!
You can see the photo set on Flickr or directly here in the embedded slideshow.

YAPC::Asia 2009 tentative dates
The dates for YAPC::Asia 2009 in Tokyo have been tentatively announced: the pre-event event will be on the 9th September; the actual YAPC will be on the 10th-11th September. I guess Tokyo will be still pretty hot in early September...

YAPC::EU 2009 schedule announced
That was impressively fast; only hours after the YAPC::EU 2009 talk submission deadline, the schedule has been announced.

Nordic Perl Workshop
I've signed up for the Nordic Perl Workshop, bought a plane ticket and booked a hotel (the Anker Best Western, recommended by Marcus Ramberg). The workshop will take place in Oslo, Norway, on 15-16 April; on Saturday and Sunday afterwards I'll participate in the Enlightened Perl Hackathon — think Catalyst, Moose and DBIx::Class, among other things.
It will be good to see Perl hacker friends again: Ingy, jrockway, nothingmuch, Marcus, Abigail, Gabor and many others. I'm thinking more and more that Perl conferences are opportunities to hang out with friends, and you can go to some talks as well if you want to.

Going to YAPC::Asia? Learn Japanese!
YAPC::Asia 2009 will probably be in September. I hope to be able to go; last year was fun and interesting.
If you're thinking of going — or even if you don't — you could start learning a few fundamentals of the Japanese language and writing systems. There are some really good learning sites and courses that I can recommend:
- Start with the hiragana course on iKnow
- Then do the katakana course on iKnow
- Learn basic words and kanji with the Japanese Core 2000 course on iKnow
- Take Japanese classes on eduFire
