YAPC::Asia 2008 photo slideshow
YAPC::Asia 2008 in Tokyo was fun, and I hope to be able to go to YAPC::Asia 2009 again, although the chance for that isn't so good, as I'm already taking a two-week holiday in Japan this May. But I want to show you photos I took at YAPC::Asia 2008, to encourage you to go as well. Really, it's quite an experience!
You can see the photo set on Flickr or directly here in the embedded slideshow.

YAPC::Asia 2009 tentative dates
The dates for YAPC::Asia 2009 in Tokyo have been tentatively announced: the pre-event event will be on the 9th September; the actual YAPC will be on the 10th-11th September. I guess Tokyo will be still pretty hot in early September...

Going to YAPC::Asia? Learn Japanese!
YAPC::Asia 2009 will probably be in September. I hope to be able to go; last year was fun and interesting.
If you're thinking of going — or even if you don't — you could start learning a few fundamentals of the Japanese language and writing systems. There are some really good learning sites and courses that I can recommend:
- Start with the hiragana course on iKnow
- Then do the katakana course on iKnow
- Learn basic words and kanji with the Japanese Core 2000 course on iKnow
- Take Japanese classes on eduFire

HTTP::Engine Conference #1 and Shibuya.pm #10
This week sees two conferences in Tokyo — they both will only last for a few hours. The first is HTTP::Engine conference #1, or HEcon1 for short. Only about 20 to 30 attendees are expected, so it's more like a tech meet with a common theme. The talks will of course be in Japanese, but you will probably get the gist from the slides. They will be streamed live over ustream and will probably be uploaded to Nico Nico Douga.
The second conference is the Shibuya.pm #10 meeting, and it is rather larger in scale. It too will only last for a few hours, but more than 100 attendees are expected, and there will be remote venues in Osaka/Kyoto and in Fukuoka. These talks will be streamed as well.
Both conferences will start in the evening in Tokyo, so they will be nice for me to watch around lunchtime at work.

Korean Perl Terms
Korean web sites and slides are, of course, in Korean and written in Hangul. Understanding the Korean language is not so easy, but reading Hangul, the Korean script, is very easy. It is basically an alphabet, based around syllables. Learn to read Hangul with this easy introduction.
Like most languages, Korean uses a lot of loan words for technical concepts. So even if you don't understand Korean, being able to read Hangul will enable you to see certain terms and get an idea what the text is about.
Here is a list of technical terms, Perl-related and otherwise, that you might find interesting. They are sorted according to Hangul sort order. The list is not complete, of course, and additions and corrections are welcome; please tell me on Twitter or mail me at my CPAN email address.

Korean Perl Workshop 2008
The Korean Perl Workshop 2008 took place in Seoul on 23rd August; its topic was "Rising Perl". The Korean Perl Mongers are already very active, meeting every week for seven hours to study the language. But this was their first Perl workshop, and I'm very happy to learn that my talk about Perl in Japan and Korea inspired them to do it. Apparently 70 people attended, but they could have had 300 if the venue was big enough.
You can also see the presentations and slides. Of course, most of the slides are in Korean and are written in Hangul, but if you can read Hangul, you will be able to make out certain keywords. Hangul is really easy to learn too — it's just an alphabet, based around syllables.
I've suggested that it might be a nice idea to have another Korean Perl Workshop maybe a week before or after YAPC::Asia 2009. This way you could see Perl events in both Japan and Korea, which to me sounds very interesting and appealing.
Actually, the TwinCity Perl Workshop was advertised as the 100th Perl conference ever, but that was before Philippe Bruhat (BooK), the conference list maintainer, has learned about the Korean Perl Workshop. So now it seems that the Korean Perl Workshop was the 100th Perl conference. I had only mentioned it to BooK because I was not sure whether he was aware of it, but this inadvertently relegated the TwinCity Perl Workshop to 101st place; a fact that will surely not help in making me popular with the TwinCity Perl Workshop organisers…

Codereposcon1 and other mini-conferences in Japan
Most Perl Monger groups have meetings; some only drink; others have tech talks and then drink. But mostly the tech talks don't have a theme - anyone who wants to talk about anything remotely Perl-related can do so. Shibuya.pm has these kinds of tech talk meetings as well, twice a year, and I'm told they attract an audience of more than a hundred people.
But the japanese Perl (and Ruby and JavaScript etc.) hackers also have other kinds of meetings. They could be called themed mini-conferences, taking place only during one evening. The talks there are short, about ten minutes each, and focus on the evening's topic. So far there have been several such mini-conferences: plaggercon, catalystcon, soozycon (five, various topics), xsnite and now codereposcon1.
About a dozen japanese open source hackers met in an apartment; they had their laptops (lots of MacBooks) and a beamer. The talks were obviously about CodeRepos, the vast svn repository for all things open source in Japan.
But the world knows about it because Mizoguchi Coji (coji) records the talks, both slides and speakers, using picture-in-picture, and streams them on Ustream. Later during the evening and night he uploads the videos to Nico Nico Douga. The videos belonging to one such gathering are grouped together on a page on techtalk.jp, like on this one for codereposcon.
There are also loads of pictures from the evening on flickr, tagged with "codereposcon1". Some speakers keep their talk slides on CodeRepos as well.
If you need to register an account on Nico Nico Douga, then Google can point you to several pages that tell you how to do it.

YAPC::Asia 2008 and hackathon photos uploaded
I've uploaded all the photos I took during YAPC::Asia 2008 and during the hackathon. They are in a Flickr set and also tagged with yapcasia2008.
If you are interested in the other pictures I took during my two-week stay in Tokyo, you can see all pictures in yet another Flickr set.

"Perl in Japan" slides
Tonight was a Vienna.pm TechSocialMeeting. First domm talked about exception handling, then Jonathan Worthington, who now lives in Bratislava, one hour away from Vienna, gave a talk about Rakudo, then it was my turn to talk about the japanese Perl community: who they are, how they work, what they do. It contains impressions I brought back from YAPC::Asia 2008. Too many people don't know anything about asian perl mongers. That's a shame because there are some really interesting developments going on there. I've also briefly talked about Perl in Korea; there seems to be a small but intense community and I hope to find out more.
Here are the slides from the talk — if the embedded slideshow doesn't work for you, you can find them on SlideShare.

CodeRepos ktkr!
I've moved most of my code to CodeRepos. Thanks to Yappo-san for the commit bit. Now every CodeRepos committer (that is, all the cool Japanese hackers and some gaijin) can patch my distros. Looking forward to it!
