Hi! Please consider following me on twitter: @hanekomu.

I'm going to YAPC::Europe 2009 in Lisbon

Last night we had a Vienna.pm meeting. I got enthusiastic about YAPC::Europe 2009 so I booked a flight to and hotel in Lisbon and bought the conference ticket. I'm looking forward to seeing fellow Perl hacker friends again, especially @keiosu, @maokt, and @kawa0117.

YAPC::Asia 2008 photo slideshow

YAPC::Asia 2008 in Tokyo was fun, and I hope to be able to go to YAPC::Asia 2009 again, although the chance for that isn't so good, as I'm already taking a two-week holiday in Japan this May. But I want to show you photos I took at YAPC::Asia 2008, to encourage you to go as well. Really, it's quite an experience!

You can see the photo set on Flickr or directly here in the embedded slideshow.

YAPC::Asia 2009 tentative dates

The dates for YAPC::Asia 2009 in Tokyo have been tentatively announced: the pre-event event will be on the 9th September; the actual YAPC will be on the 10th-11th September. I guess Tokyo will be still pretty hot in early September...

YAPC::EU 2009 schedule announced

That was impressively fast; only hours after the YAPC::EU 2009 talk submission deadline, the schedule has been announced.

Going to YAPC::Asia? Learn Japanese!

YAPC::Asia 2009 will probably be in September. I hope to be able to go; last year was fun and interesting.

If you're thinking of going — or even if you don't — you could start learning a few fundamentals of the Japanese language and writing systems. There are some really good learning sites and courses that I can recommend:

Of course, there's lots more you could do. I like watching Japanese movies, drama series and anime, for example. Learning a new language is fun!

YAPC::Europe 2008

YAPC::Europe 2008 has been over for a while, and quite a few people have written about it and posted pictures, slides and videos. So I won't reiterate all that information here but will write about subjective impressions.

I liked the conference a lot; the selection of talks was interesting and the venue was excellent. The conference dinner was good as well, but as a suggestion — if you're going to have a buffet, please don't make it a sit-down dinner. The idea of "this row goes first, that row goes last" just doesn't work. Having said that, there was enough food for everyone, and it was good. YAPC::Asia 2008 did it well; there were big tables with food and drinks and people just wandered around, socialized and took whatever they wanted from the buffet - there was no queue.

If you're ever in Copenhagen, avoid the Cabinn Hotels. Their motto is "Sleep Cheap in Luxury", but it's a lie — the only true word is "in". It was not cheap (I've stayed in a much better hotel in Tokyo for two-thirds the price), it certainly was not luxurious, and as for sleep — well, the bed wasn't comfortable either. I've realized that when I'm going to Perl conferences, I want to have a good time and get motivation, and there aren't that many conferences I'll go to, so in the future I'll choose nice hotels.

The other thing I'd like to comment on is the auction. Please make it faster next time — see how Greg (McCarroll) does it. And leave out the stripping, wrestling and other "laddish" things — are you still wondering why there are so few women in the Perl community?

But all this nagging shouldn't detract from the fact that I've thoroughly enjoyed myself; it was good to meet all the people again, to get fresh ideas, and to get a feeling of belonging within the Perl community. Congratulations and thanks to the organizers.

I've uploaded some photos from Copenhagen and the YAPC.

YAPC::Asia 2008 and hackathon photos uploaded

I've uploaded all the photos I took during YAPC::Asia 2008 and during the hackathon. They are in a Flickr set and also tagged with yapcasia2008.

If you are interested in the other pictures I took during my two-week stay in Tokyo, you can see all pictures in yet another Flickr set.

YAPC::Asia ni ikimasu

I've registered for the YAPC::Asia, so the next thing to do is to find a flight and a hotel.

18 days later

Has it really only been two and a half weeks since the end of YAPC::EU 2007? In this relatively short time I have already discovered some new technologies/toys, and have started to use others that I knew before but didn't really have any time or motivation to explore. Among them are, in no particular order: Plagger, SVK, del.icio.us, Twitter, Vox, Web::Scraper, ShipIt, Module::Install, miro, tvrss.net, OpenID, last.fm, SlideShare, Dopplr, TheSchwartz, Kwalify, Data::ObjectDriver, memcached, Test::Base and more.

I feel a bit like I imagine the Japanese must have felt in 1854 when Commodore Perry landed and pretty much kicked them into the technological reality of the day.

Normally a month goes by much too fast, but this time there's been so much happening in those 18 days that YAPC::EU feels long ago already.

So, thank you, Perl community; thank you, YAPC::EU!

YAPC::NA afterglow

Revision: Without Damian, it would only have been half a conference, but without Kevin, Luc and Rich, there would have been no conference. Congratulations on organizing it and keeping it running smoothly.

On the flight back I was thinking about Ruby's literals-as-objects and realized that Perl can do this as well. By overloading constants, you can do things like

print 42->times(3);
print 'hello world'->reverse;

This could be used for runtime properties:

return 0->true;

Now we need to override the test for definedness to also check for this property along with the value.
